MEMBERS RECEIVE HOPKINS AWARDS

A trio of staff members of three
separate Emporia schools found
themselves at the center of attention on Friday, as they were the
latest recipients of the Hopkins
Awards.
The Hopkins Foundation has
given away $375,000 to 190 teachers and support staff members in
the Emporia schools since the
awards began in 2002. The awards
program was a dream of E.L. Hopkins, as a way to give back to educators. The awards were present-

ed by Michelle Hopkins-Molinaro,
vice president and managing director of the foundation.
Each recipient received a
$2,000 cash award to use however
they see fit, along with $1,000 to
give back to their school.
David Delgado is a custodian
at Mary Herbert Education Center and has worked for Emporia
Public Schools since 2007. Delgado said he had no idea he would
be receiving a Hopkins Award.

What fundraising has been
done for a new school
building?
At this time the district has
not attempted to fundraise
for a new school building. The Gazette has researched other school
districts that have constructed
new buildings in the past ten years
and none of those districts fundraised either. All were funded utilizing bonds.
