Catrina Allen leads the field at -6 overall after posting a -5 Friday. Paige Pierce is in second at +3 for the tournament, followed by Emporia resident Paige Bjerkaas, who was +4 for the day to sit at +5 heading into Saturday’s final round. C O U R T E S Y O F S T U M U L L E N B E R G THREE EMPORIA SCHOOL STAFF MEMBERS RECEIVE HOPKINS AWARDS By John Robinson [email protected] A trio of staff members of three separate Emporia schools found themselves at the center of attention on Friday, as they were the latest recipients of the Hopkins Awards. The Hopkins Foundation has given away $375,000 to 190 teachers and support staff members in the Emporia schools since the awards began in 2002. The awards program was a dream of E.L. Hopkins, as a way to give back to educators. The awards were present- BECAUSE YOU ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE USD 251 BOND PROPOSAL ed by Michelle Hopkins-Molinaro, vice president and managing director of the foundation.  Each recipient received a $2,000 cash award to use however they see fit, along with $1,000 to give back to their school. David Delgado is a custodian at Mary Herbert Education Center and has worked for Emporia Public Schools since 2007. What fundraising has been done for a new school building? At this time the district has not attempted to fundraise for a new school building. The Gazette has researched other school districts that have constructed new buildings in the past ten years and none of those districts fundraised either. All were funded utilizing bonds.
