Greetings from the President

Over the next year or so, we hope to bring your attention to the new bells and whistles that this new medium affords its readership. As with the latest offerings from any dealership worth its salt, the highlighted feature of this new format is convenience, convenience, and convenience! “Going digital” allows timely content that you can enjoy on your computer, on your tablet, or even on your phone.

As we explore the distinct advantages of this new communications tool, the editorial staff will continually add new features and ways to present the content that will bring Alumnus to life.

We would also like to hear your ideas about what you would like to see and hear in our newsletter. It's an exciting change that we have made with this electronic format, and we want the entire University community to play a part in its success.

As we celebrate 110 years of academic excellence, we must remind ourselves of the responsibilities that institutions of such distinction require. We have a responsibility to change, we have a responsibility to discover, and we have a responsibility to understand.

With each passing year, with each graduation and with each ceremony, these new beginnings help to define and catalyze our institution's

ever-changing reflection. We must however, continue the challenge to manage within the confines of a steadfast commitment to a consistent and understood mission. Each new class of students comprehends the voice of the mission in their own way. Each new class is influenced by tenured thought and process, but at the same time guided into the future through the academic interactions of give and take. In that same give and take, the academy as a whole discovers and refines its own mission and evolves into what each of its graduates remembers.

the mission in their own way. Each new class is influenced by tenured thought and process, but at the same time guided into the future through the academic interactions of give and take. In that same give and take, the academy as a whole discovers and refines its own mission and evolves into what each of its graduates remembers.

With such a long history, NUHS must avoid the pitfalls of maintaining a status quo for the sake of tradition. We must be open to what is written on the wall but remain mindful to the voices of the past. Our hope is with the tethering to excellence, usefulness and pertinence. From these connections, National will continue to deliver opportunity.

As such, we take advantage of celebrations such as our 110 years of existence. But where to start? In these pages we have chosen to start with what really defines a University — people. Staff, faculty and students are a great way to highlight the product of our endurance. Please enjoy this issue of the Alumnus and the stories of some of our most recent successes. To continue your success and to provide another opportunity to celebrate, please pay special attention to the information of our upcoming homecoming. I look forward to seeing you there.

Congratulations on being part of our 110 years of excellence.

Dr. Joseph Stiefel invites you back on campus to attend Homecoming 2017! He also expresses his gratitude to Dr. Bruce Hodges for his work at

the University.

Welcome to another edition of the Alumnus! Let me first start by thanking all of our alumni who reached out to us during the hurricanes in both Texas and Florida. In every sense of the phrase, we’ve weathered the storms. Alumni in both states have certainly been affected and we thank you for your concern. Our Florida site suffered very little damage and faculty and staff in both Illinois and Florida have stepped up to lessen the impact on the students.

In this edition we have taken advantage of the digital platform and are able to share some great video footage with you. I invite you to have a look at the time-lapse video we put together for our newly renovated Student Center, this years Homecoming recap video, and an alumnus highlight video featuring 2002 graduate Mark McCray.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t call attention to the Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Practice, which is now available, completely online. Many of you asked that we move the program online to accommodate your busy practice life. I invite you to learn more about that program here and on our website.

As you will see in this issue, National continues to grow and strengthen. Our community is able to weather the storm because of the people found herein. Their stories are reminders of the foundational qualities of our University. You, as a member of that community, have an open invitation to share your story or experiences with us – we’d love to read about you in our next issue.
