LOUISVILLE WELCOMES 2015
MEDICAL RESIDENTS
The University of Louisville’s Kornhauser Health Sciences Library hosted the
2015 new resident orientation on Tuesday, June 30, with more than 160 residents and fellows beginning their health care careers. Many physician leaders from Jefferson County and across Kentucky came as guests to guide and
encourage the fledgling physicians.
The morning began with an impassioned welcome from GLMS President-Elect
and UofL Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education John Roberts, MD,
who stressed the importance of balancing a career in medicine with the need
for a private life.
Dr. Roberts touched on the goals each resident should have. He offered that one
way to stand out amongst peers was to get involved with organized medicine,
serve on committees, and meet physicians all over Jefferson County. “Think
about where you want to be when you finish your residency. I’d submit that
you want to be at the top of every future employers list. You want them to
recognize you,” he said.
GLMS President Robert Couch, MD, MBA, was on hand to welcome the new
physicians to Louisville and talk about the professional opportunities here
which are unlike anywhere else.
“Kentucky is really at the forefront of organized medicine on the national
stage. We’ve had two presidents of the American Medical Association in the
last two years. That’s almost unheard of and with Dr. Bruce Scott’s election
as the AMA Vice Speaker, we have additional leadership there as well. It’s just
amazing,” Dr. Couch said, encouraging residents to follow their passion into
organized medicine. “You have your career and training in front of you. You
survived medical school and suddenly it’s just about to get real.”
Dr. Couch also taught those in attendance about some advantages of joining
GLMS such as inclusion in the annual pictorial roster, the ability to participate
in networking events, and representation at the local, state and national levels.
“In this town, we have a very strong heritage of organized medicine and we
want to continue that legacy and invite you into the process early on,” he said.
“Best wishes for a successful and rewarding residency experience, and for a
fulfilling career in medicine.”
