Undergraduate Degrees Bachelor of Science Biology The Study of Life, at LIFE In its simplest sense, biology is the study of life; how organisms function, grow, interact and evolve, from single-celled microbes to complex human and animal life forms to entire ecosystems. Biologists are endlessly fascinated by the wonders of life in all forms. They work diversely in fields as varied and numerous as the plants and animals they study, pursuing opportunities and careers in laboratory and field research, education, healthcare, journalism, entrepreneurship and many other exciting industries. The questions biologists ask and the answers they discover have a profound effect on the way we understand and inhabit the world around us. Our B.S. in Biology students have the unique opportunity to study life, at LIFE. A Biology degree from Life University yields more than lab experience and preparation for continued study at the master’s level. Because LIFE’s curriculum is grounded in a philosophy that is deeply respectful of the innate intelligence of life – the ability of all organisms to be self-developing, self-healing and self-maintaining – you’ll not only develop a solid knowledge-base in the foundations of biology, you’ll cultivate a sense of respect and responsibility for our human role in understanding and influencing both our own living bodies and our place in the world. The Foundation of a Successful Biology Career The American Institute of Biological Sciences recommends students pursuing a career in biology choose an undergraduate institution where faculty have significant expertise in the particular fields that match the student’s own interests; that the school demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education (with a majority of courses being taught by experienced professors, not graduate student teaching assistants); and that the coursework offer a wealth of diverse research opportunities where students can work with and under faculty experts to conduct original studies and contribute to the canon of knowledge on those subjects that most interest them. At LIFE, you’ll have access to all this and more. The LIFE Experience At many large, public schools offering B.S. in Biology programs, lecture-driven classes seating hundreds of students are par for the course. Not at LIFE. Here you’ll enjoy the benefits of a private education, without the private-school price tag. Classes are small (average student to teacher ratio is 17:1), with a focus on engaged and active learning, such as small-group work, one-on-one interaction with faculty mentors and hands-on experience both on and off campus. Your lab component may be as intimate as 10 students working closely with a faculty mentor. All courses at LIFE are taught by experienced faculty members who have been recognized as experts and leaders in their respective fields. Labs are also taught by professors. Because LIFE professors spend so much time in the classroom and in the lab, they get to know you on a personal level as a student and a colleague. Taking on the role of mentor as well as teacher better enables our faculty to assist you as you pursue your individual interests and career goals both in the classroom and beyond.
