When it comes to searching for an engineering role you’ll find you have a lot of competition, most of which are fellow university graduates. One way to stand out from the graduate crowd is having heaps of experience. It's better to start as early as you can. Take up some unpaid volunteering and internships.
Balancing your university life will be one of the most difficult but rewarding learning curves of your life. Most employers won’t look at graduates without at least a 2.1 because in their minds you didn’t balance your time effectively and let your grades slip. For some students, this could be because of work or other commitments. If you’re on track to get good grades then do that little bit extra and join sports clubs and show that you were able to balance your time effectively. For some who are worried about their grades, knuckling down and coming out of university with a good grade is a priority.
The engineering industry isn’t small! Many students who start their degrees have no idea what they want to go into after they graduate. Volunteering and work experience will certainly help you decide your future career path. However, it’s also useful to speak to people in the industry - LinkedIn is a great platform to ask these questions and make connections.
Do some research on companies which have previously boasted about hiring graduates - many will have programmes you can apply for. If you find companies that interest you, find out as much as you can ab out them as this will also benefit you if you get an interview!
