Hereford Lions Club
CITY GEARS UP FOR
FESTIVE SHOPPING SPREE
The 21st Annual Edition - November 2014
The success of Hereford’s £90m new shopping and leisure
centre which opened just seven months ago plus the end of
recession is expected to bring the city bumper Christmas sales
to give a further boost to an improving local economy. With
some big name shops now open local families have no excuse
to travel out of the county for Christmas shopping. The
message is clear: Support your own town if you want it to
thrive.
After being in sharp decline
for a decade or more Hereford is
once again building a reputation
as a key shopping destination in
the region and the spin-off of the
new stores, restaurants and six
screen cinema at Old Market is a
sign of increasing trade for the
rest of the city centre based
around High Town.. Good
Christmas sales figures for shops
in the historic core of the city
will be a barometer for the vital
sustained growth required to
ensure success of a citywide
regeneration..
Virtually all units at Old
Market are now let and if
Hereford can show itself as a
potential boom town other
retailers will soon be moving
into the dozen or so empty
shops in the city centre,
especially as existing traders are
launching their own bid to
persuade the Government to
allow them to charge a levy on
business rates to fund a scheme
to promote Hereford as a prime
shopping destination.
Sparkling Christmas Lights in
both High Town and Old Market
have already been switched on
signaling the start of the
traditional festive shopping
spree and with restrictions on
family budgets beginning to ease
and a bigger and more exciting
range of shops to chose from
Hereford is poised to set new
Christmas sales records.
Happy Shopping!!
The 17 young girls who make up the 23rd Girl Guides troop at Barrs Court special school in Hereford are planning a trip to Disney World
Paris next summer as a very special treat, but they need to raise the £4000 cost to get to France. When Hereford Lions Club heard of
their exciting venture they decided to play ‘Santa’ and sent club president Mike Poole along to the school to meet the Guides and present
them with a cheques for £1000 to cover a quarter of the costs. Said Mike: “The visit to Disney World will be a wonderful experience for
the girls and we wanted to help them get the fund off to a good start.”The troop still needs another £1000 to fund the four day trip next
August and donations will be much appreciated said the troop leader Emily Hales.
