BOB COUCH Page 1 - Scott Elected Vice Speaker The Greater Louisville Medical Society invited members to the Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville for the annual Presidents’ Celebration on Sunday, May 31. The riverfront location provided an ideal venue to welcome the 2015-2016 GLMS President Robert (Bob) Couch, MD, MBA, as well as announce this year’s winners of the Richard Spear, MD, Memorial Essay Contest. Page 5 -  015 GLMS 2 Foundation Golf Tournament Outgoing GLMS President Bruce Scott, MD, who will now serve as GLMS Board Chair for a year following his presidency, praised Dr. Couch and other leaders of GLMS for providing a strong foundation for progress in the medical community. “They say the way to be successful as a leader is to surround yourself with a good team. You all have made it easy to have a great year.” Page 5 - Jackson Awarded Congressional Fellowship Dr. Scott then welcomed Dr. Couch to the podium and presented him with the ceremonial president’s gavel, officially beginning his 2015-2016 presidency. Dr. Couch thanked the outgoing president for his leadership and presented him with a plaque honoring his time as president. Dr. Couch officially announced the winners of the recent GLMS officers’ election including incoming President-Elect John Roberts, MD, Vice President Robert Zaring, MD, MMM, and Treasurer Frank Burns, MD. AMA ELECTS DR. BRUCE SCOTT TO VICE SPEAKER GLMS Board Chair Bruce Scott, MD, was recently elected to the position of vice speaker to the American Medical Association’s House of Delegates. Dr. Scott was elected at the 2015 AMA annual meeting which took place over the first weekend in June. He is an experienced leader with the AMA and has served as president of the AMA Resident and Fellow Section, the young physician member of the AMA Board of Trustees, vice chair of the AMA Advisory Committee on Membership and president of the AMA Foundation. “It’s an honor to be elected to the AMA House of Delegates where I plan to serve as an essential voice on behalf of our nation’s physicians and patients,” Dr. Scott said. Dr. Scott is the first AMA Vice Speaker from Kentucky, but the state (continued on page 3) is highly represented at the national level of organized medicine. In addition to Dr. Scott’s newly elected position, Dr. Steven Stack, an emergency physician practicing in Lexington, has been sworn in as the 170th president of the AMA. MeanPhoto by AMA/Ted Grudzinski while, Dr. Ardis Dee Hoven, also of Lexington, continues to be quite influential at the national level as she recently served as AMA President from 2013 to 2014. In addition, GLMS President-Elect John Roberts, MD, was elected as the chair-elect of the AMA Medical Schools Governing Council.
