THE Teeswater long wool breed has been bred for over two hundred years in the North of England , indigenous as their name implies to Teesdale in County Durham . The breed became rare by the 1920s but has seen something of a renaissance in the post war years , being renowned for its :

• Large size - the average adult ewe weighing 80kg and rams weighing 100kg

• Fleece quality - carrying a fine , long-stapled , kemp-free fleece of natural white lustre .

The Teeswater Breed Association was formed in 1949 with the aim of encouraging breeders to improve the quality of the breed . Our editor caught up with former Chairman of the society and current council member Bradley Chandler , for a discussion regarding the breed . One of the main aims behind the Association is to preserve the purity and quality of the Breed , whilst actively promoting the breed around the

country . “ We will be enthusiastically promoting the breed at shows throughout the showing season , including the NSA sheep event at Malvern , Worcestershire in July ”, commented Bradley Chandler .

Both the Teeswater ewes and rams have a lot of qualities , with the primary objective of producing rams for crossing with hill breed ewes as they make excellent crossing sires . This is especially the case when crossing the Teeswater ram with the Dalesbred ewe to produce the Masham half bred , which are found throughout the UK .

The striking majestic appearance of the Teeswater makes them an ideal breed for the show ring , but their commercial viability is also unrivalled .
