Hours before students fill the
halls of Timmerman Elementary
school, the kitchen is buzzing
with activity. Inside the school,
the bakers of the Emporia Public
Schools’ central kitchen begin
their day baking enough bread
for every student in the district.
“They make all the hamburger buns, the dinner rolls, the
banana bread and the muffins,”
said Denise Kater, director of
food service for Emporia. “The

The Emporia Public Schools
Board of Education received
public comment about trimester
scheduling Wednesday evening,
discuss a partnership to use the
Emporia State football field and
heard a report on attendance.
A c c o rd i n g t o E m p o r i a
High School principal Britton Hart, trimester scheduling was the best option when
considering alternates to the
current system.
“We looked at several different schedules before we found
the trimester,” Hart said. “Trimester scheduling is conducive to our students’ needs,
abides by our fiscal responsibilities and will be a great benefit to achievement.”
Instead of the traditional twosemester grading periods which
last 87 days, the new schedule
will include three 58-day grading periods, according to documentation provided by Hart.
The board voted to implement trimester scheduling for
the 2016-2017 school year at
all levels in USD 253. The first
trimester will begin on Aug. 17
and end on Nov. 10, while the
second ends on Feb. 22 and the
last one will end on May 24.
According to Hart , the
change will give high school
students more contact with
teachers.
“Students will have more
days in a semester to learn the
same amount of content,” Hart
said. “But they’ll hopefully be
learning it at a deeper level
with the experts we have with
our teachers.”

Rich Avery, outgoing Chamber board chair, reflects on 2015.

Rich Avery, owner of Pizza
Ranch and DG Wingz, completed his term as Board of
Directors Chair in December.
Avery outlined a few of his
greatest successes during his
time as chair.
“I would say relationships
that the chamber built with
business and community,”
said Avery. “Just, overall,
growing the fundamentals
of the chamber and the involvement the chamber had

with different organizations,
being part of the community
visioning that’s going on right
now with Emporia. The membership that we were able to
work with this year, not only
adding new members to come
on board with the chamber
but the amount of ribbon cuttings that we were able to do
with new businesses in the
community.
“So I would say the greatest accomplishment would
just be living out the chamber’s vision and that is, be a
business organization for the
businesses in Emporia and
be a support for them,”
said Avery. “… (to) help
promote them and be involved with anything that
they need help with.”
Avery enjoyed his time as
the chair.
“I’d say what I liked most
about it were the relationship
opportunities,” said Avery. “I
learned a lot about the community that I didn’t know
after being here for seven
years.”
Avery will remain on the
board as the immediate past

Pete Euler was chosen to be the chair of the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce
for 2016.

Pete Euler has been chosen as the new chair for the
2016 Emporia Area Chamber
of Commerce Convention
and Visitors Bureau.
Euler has lived in Emporia
for about 30 years and is with
State Farm Insurance. He has
served on the chamber board
for about five years. He is optimistic about Emporia in 2016.
“It’s a great time to be in
a chair position when everybody is positive, upbeat and
looking forward to the next
day, the next month and the
next year,” said Pete Euler.
Euler has a couple of goals
in mind for the chamber in
2016.
“The Emporia Area
Chamber of Commerce has
been around for 119 years
so the first goal is to make
sure you continue to advance
that cause and be in the right
place at the right time, willing to listen and willing to
get yourself involved in it (the
community),” said Euler.
“After a chamber business
retreat, the members came
back with the goal ‘focus up-
on what it is that you provide
and providing that to the best
of your ability,’” said Euler.
“That’s (another) one of the
goals, is getting better at
what we do and how we communicate that to everyone we
serve or provide for.”
However, Euler knows
he’s not alone in making great
things happen with the chamber.
“As chairman it’s not just
you.
