Patient Education Mount Carmel East Surgery Waiting Area

MOUNT CARMEL EAST Surgery Waiting Area Welcome to the Surgery Waiting Area We realize that waiting while a family member or friend has a medical procedure is difficult to do, but we’re committed to making your experience here at Mount Carmel East as pleasant as possible. While you’re waiting, consider the Surgery Waiting Area your home base. It’s the best place to be to get updates about your loved one, and reviewing this information and following these procedures will help both you and us. Recovery Room If the person you’re waiting for has had surgery, they will first be moved to the Recovery Room. The Recovery Room staff will notify one of our volunteers when your loved one is in the Recovery Room, and that volunteer will notify you. A volunteer also will tell you when your loved one is going to be transferred to a room or is ready to be discharged. Usually a patient will be in the Recovery Room for at least two hours. Visitation We do not normally allow visitors in the Recovery Room. Please speak to the pre-operative nurse if you have any questions or concerns. When the patient you’re waiting for is ready to be transferred to their assigned room, the recovery nurses will call the volunteers with the room number. Discharge If your loved one will be discharged directly from the Recovery Room, we will notify you when it’s time to bring your car to the Main Entrance of the hospital. If they’ve received any kind of sedation, we will bring them by wheelchair to your car. Breaks If you step out of the waiting area at anytime during the day, please inform the volunteers at the desk. This is very important if you wish to speak with the doctor after surgery. Please remember to check in with the volunteers when you return to the waiting area. mountcarmelhealth.com June 2011
