Recognition
National volunteer recognition week
Liz Burgard, parent involvement coordinator, and Shannon Foreman, volunteer services supervisor, introduced
a resolution in support of volunteer recognition week. Anoka-Hennepin Schools benefitted from 10,929 volun-
teers who donated 196,342 hours over the school year. That time is valued at $4.6 million in donated service to
district students and programs.
Magnet School of America Awards
Anoka-Hennepin Schools provide magnet and specialty school options for students at the elementary, middle
school and high school level. Three schools were honored including Anoka Middle School for the Arts was
named a Magnet School of Excellence; and Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy for Environmental Science and
Math and Lincoln Elementary School for the Arts were both named Magnet Schools of America Schools of Dis-
tinction.
Anoka Middle School for the Arts
Jerri McGonigal, principal, introduced Jolanda Dranchak, curriculum integrator, who was recognized for her
selection as the Arts Educator of Minnesota Arts Administrator of the Year. The Storm, AMSA’s student literary
magazine, was also recognized for receiving a superior rating from the National Council of Teachers of English.
This is the sixth consecutive year that the publication has received national recognition.
Coon Rapids Middle School
Tom Shaw, principal, led a presentation recognizing student success in music and math. Choir teacher Sheri
Turnquist joined in celebrating the selection of Owen Sanders, Kate Garbow and Ariana Zdon to the All-State
Honors Choir. Eight CRMS students gained top ten percent status at the St. Cloud State University Math Com-
petition including seventh grade students Katrina Hoggarth, Peyton Himley, Andrew Mensink, Samuel Iribe and
Jennifer Carlson along with eighth grade student Henry Staples. Students who finished in the top five percent
include eighth-grade students Bradley Johnson and Rachel Sterling. Math teacher Stephanie Hutchens intro-
duced the students.
Northdale Middle School
Jeff Leach, principal, led a presentation honoring eight students who finished in the top ten percent at the St.
Cloud State Math Competition. Noah Gould, grade 7, and Emily Nguyen, grade 8, finished in the top five percent.
Eighth-grade students Jessy Kowal and Daniel Gettel joined seventh-grade high achievers Grace Gruenhagen,
Noel Atkinson, Elijah Mireles and Dylan Bauer all finished in the top ten percent. Math teacher Stephanie Pogalz
introduced the students.
