ONTARIO’S MIDWIVES:
From Marginal To Mainstream
W
hen government funding for two new midwifery-led birth centres
was announced in 2012, the story of Ontario’s midwives came
full circle. That story is older than Ontario and even older than
European colonization of North America. Aboriginal midwives were caring for
women centuries before European settlers arrived here in the 17th century.
