Festive News Hereford Lions Club SALE OF HOLIDAY HOME WILL BENEFIT COMMUNITY The 22nd Annual Edition ~ November 2015 Hereford Lions Club is selling its Holiday Home in Burnham-onSea and investing the proceeds in a new Community Support Foundation to aid local charities and community led projects which benefit the well-being of those living in the city and nearby villages. The seafront property, which provided free holidays for upwards of 10,000 people over almost 40 years and closed two years ago is being sold at auction on November 25. It is expected to fetch in excess of £250,000. Terry Williams, chairman of the Holiday Home trustees said: “Since it opened in 1977 the Lions Holiday Home was a tremendous a support to all those families, the elderly and the handicapped who might not otherwise have benefited from the therapeutic value of a seaside holiday. Sadly, times have changed and in recent years applications for free holidays dwindled, costs of running and maintaining the large property soared and an aging membership of the club resulted in fewer volunteers to drive the Lions mini-bus each Sunday on the 150 mile round trip to Burnham.” He added: “Ending the holiday service was a sad and difficult decision but it will allow Lions Club to use the assets raised by the sale to support a much wider range of charities and community projects here in Hereford. Lions have served the community for 55 years and the extra money from the new Trust Fund will extend and broaden the range of what we can achieve.” The ethos of free self -catering holidays for those in need established by members of the club when they bought the first property, a chalet at Aberystwyth in 1960 remains enshrined in the constitution of the new Foundation and grants will be available from Lions Club to help pay for them Club member Denzil Biggs, who played a key role in buying the Burnham property for £32,000 in 1977 told Festive News: “It really was the Jewel in the Crown of all the activities undertaken by Lions Club over the past half century and closing the home was a wrench for me personally, but it was the right thing to do and the funds raised can now be used to help a far greater number of people in need of our support.” For information about the property and auction contact the agents, Abbott and Frost 01278 782266 Danni’s Perfect Christmas Present Danni Clarke, a 32 year old mum of four paralysed by a rare brain condition and unable to walk has had the Christmas present she wished for - a specially designed all-terrain wheelchair which will allow her to go on adventure trips with her husband and children.
