WWW.MIDHUDSONTIMES.COM The Environmental Protection Agency has lowered the health advisory limit for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a chemical that caused the City of Newburgh to shut off its water supply at Washington Lake earlier this month. The EPA dropped its health advisory limit for PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from 200 parts per trillion to 70 parts per trillion. The new limits “reflect EPA’s assessment of the best available peer-reviewed science,” the EPA states. The decision arrives more than a month after PFOS was found in city drinking water and the city’s main water source, Washington Lake. A test sample taken at a pond at the Air National Guard Base at Stewart International Airport revealed a level of PFOS at 5,900 parts per trillion. The retention pond empties into Continued on page 27
