Dr. Carol Leet looks forward
to leading the College towards
greater transparency
In December, Dr. Carol Leet became the President of
the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Recently, we spoke to Dr. Leet, a Brampton pediatrician,
about her thoughts on the coming year.

Q: Decisions about transparency will be a big
part of your presidential year. As a long-time
chair of the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports
Committee, how do you feel about greater
transparency as it relates to complaints?
A. As chair of the ICRC, I’ve certainly seen the full
range of complaints that can be brought forward by the
public. I’ve come to realize that while there are many
issues that don’t meet the threshold for a discipline
hearing, it would be helpful for the public and the
profession to be aware of what these issues are. Society,
in general, seems to want more transparency and we
need to be active participants in this initiative. There is
already quite a lot of information in the ICRC annual
report, but it is mainly in the form of statistics. I think
more specific information will be helpful for everyone
and, in fact, provide further insights to help doctors
improve their care and communication with patients.
Q. And as President of the CPSO, how do you hope
to move the transparency initiative forward?
A. For the last two years, Council has been working on
increasing transparency and we have made it a strategic priority for the next three years. There is more
information now on our register and that will only be
