CAREER & MONEY GOLF IS A GREAT WORKOUT 64 GAZELLE WEST The family owned and operated Warrenton Golf Course in Warrenton, Missouri was a dream of Larry and Gail Luecke, who along with their sons, Keith, and Kevin, opened the course in 1971. Starting with nine holes, a putting green, and a driving range, in 1978, the back nine holes were added to make it the only eighteen-hole public golf course from St. Charles to Columbia, Missouri. In the 1980s, cart paths and watered fairways were added; in the 1990s, a pavilion, and the front nine was remodeled. In the early 2000s, zoysia fairways became a part of the course, providing optimum playing conditions. Warrenton Golf Course facilities host a variety of events, and has been a tournament venue for over thirty-two years, assisting organizations like The American Cancer Society with fundraising efforts, as well as those who sponsor causes like Alzheimer’s disease, Down’s syndrome, muscular dystrophy, the senior center, schools, boosters, churches, missions, scholarships, clubs and organizations, as well as family reunions and corporate events. In addition to the outings and charity events, course tournaments range from one-, two-, three- and fourperson scrambles, open to all ability levels and sexes. Golf is a fairly low-impact sport that can be played by people of all ages, and provides a great workout for all. Men’s, women’s, and industrial leagues are held Monday through Thursday. Most recently, Warrenton Golf Course has instituted a successful Friday Fun Couples Outing that includes a themed meal at the end of the round, bringing in couples from surrounding Missouri communities and Illinois. This year, a new weekday senior scramble will be open to all senior golfers. The golf course provides complimentary space for Warrenton High School practices and meets, and cart attendant has been the first job for many local youths, who played golf at the state champion’s level and have gone on to play the sport in college.
