WHY IS 5G
NEEDED, AND
WHEN CAN WE
EXPECT IT?
The 5G is transitioning from an industry
vision to a tangible, next generation mobile
technology that is beginning the formal
standardisation process. The first 5G
standard is targeted for release in the second
half of 2018 by the 3GPP and regulators
have identified global spectrum to support
the initial 5G deployments expected later in
this decade. Trials and even pre-standard
deployments have recently been announced
by some operators, writes Joseph Habib,
