Showing our thanks to those
who gave so much for our freedom
The centenary of the First World War has
focussed minds nationally on the horrors of war
and the ultimate sacrifice made by so many.
Only those that have been involved can truly
understand how awful and absolutely terrifying it
must be to be involved. It falls to the rest of us to
do all we can to promote tolerance and work to
avoid conflict.
The centenary has been marked in school by
special lessons in Year 8 relating maths, English
and all our other subjects to the 1914-18 period.
It became clear that a significant proportion
of our students did not realise that the centrepiece of our school badge is the Kimberley
War Memorial. This led me to thinking that we
could encourage our children to understand the
importance of the badge by drawing attention to it.
As a result, the School Council ran a competition
to redesign it for the centenary period, 2014-18.
The winner is a combination of two designs,
one by Lara Hind and Olivia Davis, the other
by Angelos Rousou. Governors have agreed that
the badge will replace the embroidered blazer
badge for our new Year 7 students from 2015-18
(click here to view the new embroidered logo).
Any other students requiring a new blazer are
welcome to purchase one with the new design, of
course, although the original sew-on badges will
remain available.
Above all, this is not about the glorification of
war. History teaches us that human beings
seem incapable of sharing this planet without
fighting, but that does not mean we should give
up hope. An important part of that hope for a
peaceful future lies in the respect and gratitude
we show through remembrance.
I hope you have a very Happy Christmas.

Last Day of Term Arrangements
The school will close at the end of Period 3 (12:20pm) on the last day of this term, Friday 19th December.
Buses have been arranged to pick up those students who would normally travel home by bus.
A lunchtime service will be provided by the catering staff for students who wish to remain on site for
lunch. However, the school is unable to provide supervision arrangements for students after this time.
