News NOVEMBER 2014 · VOLUME 24 & ISSUE 11 A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF THE GREATER LOUISVILLE MEDICAL SOCIETY 24 LOUISVILLE LEADERS WEAR THE WHITE COAT The fourth annual Wear the White Coat program, coordinated by GLMS, was highly successful again this year pairing Louisville physicians one on one with local business leaders, city representatives, local and state legislators and journalists to create an unforgettable experience. The program, which allows community leaders to step into the shoes of a physician by shadowing them for a day, kicked off Wednesday, October 15 with a breakfast at the Louisville Science Center. GLMS President Bruce Scott, MD, welcomed the nearly 50 participants to another exciting event. “This program is called Wear the White Coat because the white coat is very symbolic of physicians,” said Dr. Scott. “We don’t always have the coats on, but you can be sure we carry the deep conviction that the white coat represents with us at all times.” (clockwise) Bruce Scott, MD, welcomes Wear the White Coat participants; Russ Williams, MD, stands with Michael Rodman, Executive Director of the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure; Frank Martin, MD, welcomes Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk David Nicholson; Carl Coppola, MD, stands with Louisville Metro Police Foundation Exec. Director Barry Denton; Deborah Ballard, MD, MPH, talks with Brown-Forman VP & Director of Corporate Responsibility Rob Frederick. Dr. Scott continued, explaining that the program has built multiple twoway relationships between doctors and Louisville’s leading citizens. “This is a special day for us as we hope to create a strong bond with you that will lead to an ongoing partnership in which physicians and community leaders make better decisions resulting in improved health and well-being for everyone in our community.” Each pair of one physician and one community leader had three weeks in which to meet and spend a day together. The 24 pairs reconvened on Wednesday, October 5 for a dinner at The Old Medical School Building. Participants were very enthusiastic about the experience and many physicians expressed hopes of joining the Wear the White Coat experience again in 2015.
