Better Light to Guide Your Night!
Better lighting and enhanced safety on San Francisco streets, just in time for autumn’s longer nights.
We are converting 18,500 streetlights to energy-efficient LEDs (light-emitting diodes). These new LED
fixtures use 50% less energy, provide a better quality of light and last up to 20 years, saving the City
time and money.
Every light will continue to be a zero-emission streetlight powered by 100% greenhouse gas-free Hetch
Hetchy hydroelectric power. The conversion process is simple. We remove the “head” of the existing light
and replace it with a new LED fixture, leaving the pole and streetlight arm untouched. No road closures
are required and there is little if any noise. To learn more, visit our interactive map at sfwater.org/led.
