UK ENERGY

10 YEARS ON

Since the discovery of electricity around 300 years ago, we quickly became a nation and world that revolves around the ability to power electrical devices. However, our methods of harnessing energy to power our homes and businesses have changed dramatically over the course of the last 300 years and especially in the last 10.

When the power to harness electricity was discovered, wood was used as a renewable energy source. Then after, hydropower of water mills became the preferred method of energy production. In the late 19th century, coal became dominant along with petroleum products and natural gas.

Since our population and demand for energy has increased and changed, our methods of consumption have begun to change as well. We are moving to more renewable sources such as solar, wind and even tidal while moving away from non-renewable sources like oil and coal. Countries are investing billions in sustainable energy sources to ensure the longevity of our resources.

In the UK, we've seen a steady increase in renewable energy sources. Britain's offshore boom has certainly helped with renewable energy now making up a quarter of all the power generation.
