IS THIS THE EN
'DIRTY' DIESEL
In 2017, the UK government
announced that the sale of fully
petrol and diesel cars will be
banned by 2040, meaning you will
only be able to purchase hybrids
or fully electric motors. While this
is in over 20 years, local authorities
are planning to implement
measures to reduce the amount of
polluting vehicles in the near
future. Many of local authorities
will be looking to introduce no
emission zones or ‘clean air zones’
similar to the capitals congestion
and T- charge zones.
The UK high court has also criticised
the government for failing to
require action from 33 local
authorities whose air pollution
levels were illegal. Action has now
been taken to investigate
measures to lower the illegal levels
in the 33 towns and cities as soon
as possible. This could mean
restrictions such as the London T-
charge being rolled out in other
areas of the UK.
London Mayor, Sadiq Khan,
introduced a £10 ‘toxicity’ charge
known as the T-charge which
applies to drives of petrol and
diesel cars with pre-Euro 4 engines.
This is, broadly speaking, cars
made before 2005. This is in
addition to the London Congestion
charge zones charging motorists
£11.50 Monday to Friday, 7 am to
6 pm. It is predicted this will affect
10,000 cars.
In 2019, the Mayor has planned to
roll out Ultra-Low emission zones
with it being widened to other areas
the following year, all motor
vehicles which fail to meet
emission criteria will be charged
£12.50 upwards.
