COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS

Gilroy Community Happenings …

We are so fortunate to live in a community with so much heart . There never seems to be a shortage of places to go , people to see , and organizations to support .
As you will see in the following pages , these past few months have provided an abundance of all of the above . Gilroy Today is happy to include as many of these wonderful events and activities within its pages , as space allows . And we encourage community organizations and businesses to let us know about their efforts to support our community . We thank them for continuing to make Gilroy a wonderful place to live and raise a family .
SAINT PATRICK ’ S DAY
Presented by Saint Joseph ’ s Family Center
Each spring , Saint Joseph ’ s Family Center holds an annual Saint Patrick ’ s Dinner celebration ! This event helps raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our community and proceeds help support SJFC ’ s food and nutrition programs , including the Lord ’ s Table . Over 230 attended this year and the event raised over $ 30,000 .
Saint Joseph ’ s Family Center has been in existence for 32 years , and served over 7,200 unduplicated individuals during the fiscal year 2011-2012 . Their mission is to alleviate hunger and homelessness in South Santa Clara County by providing food , housing and employment related services , and advocating for system changes to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable people in our communities .

2010 and 2012 GIANT ’ S TROPHIES VISITS GILROY
Over 300 local Giants fans had the opportunity to see and be photographed with the SF Giants World Series Trophies . The stop in Gilroy was part of a three-month tour of the trophies sponsored by Ban of America . Locations with a Junior Giants program were given preference . The Mexican American Community Services Agency , MACSA , runs the local Junior Giants program and hosted the event . Christina Soto , manager of Child and Family Services for MACSA , advises they already have almost 180 sign-ups for 270 places for the local Junior Giants program which is supported by the Giants Community Fund and offers a baseball related program that teaches children confidence and leadership , and links adult mentors with the participants . The goal of the program is to develop an understanding of the importance of literacy and healthy living .
