COMMUNITY DIGEST In TIDBITS FOR AND ABOUT GILROY • MORGAN HILL • SAN MARTIN GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAL 2017 FESTIVAL QUEEN CROWNED Maggie Pickford was crowned the 2017 Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen at the annual scholarship pageant held on May 13 at Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park. Queen Maggie and her court will represent the 39th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival at numerous pre-Festival activities and throughout the three days of the Festival, July 28, 29 and 30, 2017. Currently a senior at Gilroy High School, Maggie Pickford plans to attend UCLA in the fall. As Queen, she was awarded the $1,000 top prize from the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association (GGFA) as well as a $7,500 scholarship from Christopher Ranch. Pickford also won the Talent Competition with a classical violin performance and was awarded $100 from The District Theater. GILROY FOUNDATION AWARDS CEREMONY AT OLD CITY HALL Gilroy Foundation Board showed their appreciation for Fran and Bobby Beaudet, Old City Halls supporters who have been there to help over the years, with a plaque presented by Board President Judy Lazarus. 36 GILROY • MORGAN HILL • SAN MARTIN Gilroy Foundation Annual Meeting and Charitable Grants Presentation! Last April, more than 100 donors, grantees and friends of the Gilroy Foundation gathered in the Upstairs Banquet Room of Old City Hall Restaurant to accept their checks: from a Donor-Advised Fund, Designated Fund, or Competitive Grant. $328,000 was awarded that night! The evening’s big winners were the recipients of the Julie Hayes “Rising Star” Performing Arts Competitive Grant ($20,000 was awarded to the GHS Band) and the Richard Hayes “Like a Rock” Industrial Arts Competitive Grant ($20,000 was awarded to Rebekah Children’s Services.)
