Clean Energy

alifornia continues to push for a cleaner and greener energy future despite the goings-on in Washington, D.C.
In this push, new community-owned electricity providers are being formed across the state. They’ve adopted
a new clean energy business model—commonly referred to as Community Choice Energy or Community
Choice Aggregation—that promises to be good for the environment and the economy.
If we’re going to embrace carbon-free and renewable electricity, we need a well-functioning competitive electricity
market. It’s a tall order given the utility industry’s long history of monopoly and heavy regulation. But the clock is
ticking. California’s economic health and its response to climate change impacts depends on the success of this effort.
Here in Santa Clara County, our community-owned electricity provider is Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE).
Recently,
TODAY spoke with SVCE’s Chief Executive Officer, Girish Balachandran, about the agency’s mission
and progress in its first year.
