THIS FOCUS OF THIS ISSUE
While many people view November-December as the final weeks of the
semester, it is also time for students to pre-register as well ensure they are
financially fit for the upcoming year; therefore, this issue contains articles
that address academic advising, pre-registration, and financial fitness.
Awareness of these areas at the community college will continue as students
transition to the four-year institutions. Regardless of your status, freshman or
sophomore, the articles will answer frequently asked questions and offer
insight into transferring.
PREPARING FOR PRE-REGISTRATION
The September/October issue highlighted the ACA 122 class, College Transfer
Success. The course objectives include developing a plan for completing the
community college with a degree but also to “develop a strategic plan for
transferring to a university and preparing for a new career” (ACA 122
Syllabus). Not only will one develop the plan under the guidance of the
instructor but also one will begin to implement that plan during pre-
registration. Pre-registration for the spring 2018 semester runs from Nov. 6
until Nov. 21. During these few weeks, students are to meet with their
assigned advisor, discuss career and educational goals, and map out a course
schedule. Whether one is enrolled in a face-to-face or an online section of
College Transfer Success, he/she is to contact the assigned advisor. Whether
one is a new RCC student or one preparing to graduate, he/she needs to
contact the academic advisor.
Who is my academic advisor?
Every currently enrolled RCC student
has been assigned an academic advisor.
To view that information, one must log
into Web Advisor. From that main menu, locate the Academic Profile section. Select
My Profile. This page will display the academic advisor’s contact information.
I am an evening student so I cannot come to campus during the day to
register. What do I do? Advisors usually post a sign-up sheet on their door or
electronically so students know their availability for conferences. Some advisors will
have already designated evening hours to accommodate students taking night courses; others request students schedule
an appointment.
Why do I have to see an advisor? I can register myself online through Web Advisor? That is certainly true,
but Web Advisor will not allow you to register for a class that has a prerequisite you have not completed, a co-requisite
