Is there something else I’m missing?

Yes, the legalities and tax considerations matter—you absolutely need to consider those first. However, when you move your career overseas, you also have to consider the culture of the place you’re going to call home.

1. Research salary statistics for your industry in your new local market. Know the average pay and how it compares with your current paycheck.

2. Understand the local job market and its limitations. Are you on an island where the job pool will be more limited, or a booming metropolis? This will impact your options.

3. Research the workplace culture (and learn how to avoid causing offense). For example, in Japan, employers place a value on loyalty, long hours, and manners. What constitutes poor manners in Japan will differ dramatically from Guam or Germany (and they will have their own standards as well). Your job search and future co-workers will thank you for researching and practicing in advance.

Receiving PCS orders overseas is an overwhelming proposition for anyone, especially if you’re trying to move your career too. As you research your options,

consider your ability to work, potential salary and taxes, the job market, and the workplace expectations of your new duty station. Once you’ve collected all of this information, then it’s time to consider your options and what is truly best for you and your family.

Moving overseas isn’t always the best solution for a military spouse. It’s okay to consider staying stateside to continue building your career while your spouse heads overseas for an unaccompanied tour. This is a decision that requires a lot of thought, deep discussions, and honesty.

If you take the plunge to move

overseas and can make a career

work, you’ll have international

experience to add to your resume.

And if you do decide to stay

stateside, you’ll know you made the

right decision for the right reason.

You may not have control over

where the military sends you next,

but you do have the ability to

research and make the best call for

you and your family. Here at CASY &

MSCCN, we’re rooting for you, and

are here to help however we can.
