“My son-in-law and my grandmother love
Mustangs,” Shandler said “My son-in-law
fixed cars before and sold his Mustang so this
is the perfect thing to keep him busy.”
“(The car) was pretty much driving crooked
on the way in,” said Tim Dugan, the son-in-law.
“A lot of body work had to be done.”
They brought the car to Floyd’s Inc., an
auto body shop in Emporia, in part because
of the history between Shandler and Floyd’s
co-owner John Wheeler.
Expectant mothers and their
families are invited to the Lyon
County Community Baby Shower
at 9 a.m. on April 23. The baby
shower, brought to the community by the Wade Barrett Memorial
Fund, Newman Regional Health
and the Flint Hills Technical College Practical Nursing Program,
will be held at the Flint Hills Technical College.
Gail Barrett, Wade Barrett’s
mother, says that this is the first
of what she hopes are many community baby showers. Since Wade
Barrett died as a result of Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
on June 24, 2010 the Barrett family has taken steps to reduce SIDS
deaths in the community.

Barrett says that the success of
Wade’s Ride and the generosity of
the community has allowed the

more, leading to the community

“The last couple years have
been really good fundraising for

Main Street to hold
By Cathryne Scharton

Next Saturday, Emporia Main
Street will hold The Taste from 6:30
to 9 p.m. in the William Lindsay
White Civic Auditorium.
Kansas wineries, breweries and
restaurants will give attendees a
unique opportunity to sample and
buy a number of products. General
admission is $40 and ticket-holders
must be of at least 21 years of age.
For $60 attendees can purchase a
Dinner and Taste ticket. Dinner will
be catered by Bobby D’s Merchant
Street BBQ at 5 p.m. in the Civic
Theatre Little Auditorium and includes two drinks.
In the past, the event has proved
to be popular, selling out prior to the
event.
“We started with 350 general
Taste tickets and 100 Dinner Taste
tickets. I think we are down to 10
dinner tickets now and I think we
are at 60 for the general Taste at this
point (Tuesday),” said Casey Woods,
Main Street Director.
Woods anticipates the event will
sell out again
this year. “It

“It started several years ago as
an effort to focus people on Kansasmade products and it evolved into
something that was more targeted
to Kansas wineries and breweries
—there weren’t really distilleries
when we got started,” said Woods.
“The hope was that we could emphasize the efficacy of those different businesses in a place like Emporia and get people exposed to them
and also showcase local restaurants
so we could pull people in and
show people what the restaurants
or food services could do but (also)
