There are several races that take place locally. We’re highlighting three charity races that you can do while promoting health and awareness in our community - the Savage 5K Run, the HealthyHeart 5K, and the Pounding for the Paws 5K. The Savage Run is a 5K race and acts as the primary fundraiser for The Jordan D. Savage Foundation. This foundation exists in memory of Jordan Savage, a Rockdale High School graduate who passed away from Lupus complications in 2014, only a few weeks after his graduation. It’s a place where they can get help with schoolwork and social skills. The YMCA has a summer camp that allows students to participate in athletically and educationally enriching activities. The summer camp also creates leaders in the community beginning at the age of 13 with the Leadership-in-Training program. Through this program, the teenagers can eventually become YMCA summer camp counselors. The full day camp and teen leadership camp have schedules available from May 30th through July 24th. By existing as a haven for community involvement, volunteerism, and athletic participation, Continued on page 2... expires 6/15/2017 expires 6/15/2017 T he Unity in the Community Volunteer Readers of Unity East of Atlanta have just completed a pre-K classroom reading project, in partnership with the Rockdale County Public School System (RCPS). The project for the 2016- 2017 school year served 342 pre-K students in each of the 13 Rockdale County Elementary School’s 16 pre-K classrooms. Unity in the Community Volunteer Readers read a book to the students then gave each one a book to take home with them, complete with a bookplate, stating who gave the book to the child, and space for the child’s name, and a bookmark. Funding for the books was provided by grants from local organizations.
