SUPPORT A CAUSE WHILE RUNNING IN A 5K
I
f you are interested in challenging
yourself, running a 5K is a great
goal to have, and you no longer
have to travel far to participate in a 5K
race. There are several races that take
place locally. We’re highlighting three
charity races that you can do while
promoting health and awareness in our
community - the Savage 5K Run, the
HealthyHeart 5K, and the Pounding for
the Paws 5K.
The Savage Run is a 5K race and acts
as the primary fundraiser for The Jordan
D. Savage Foundation. This foundation
exists in memory of Jordan Savage, a
Rockdale High School graduate who
passed away from Lupus complications
in 2014, only a few weeks after his
graduation.
The foundation is a community
service organization that promotes
athletic participation for young

equipment fees for those who are not

very summer and
during after school
programs, students
thrive in an environment
established by the
Covington Family YMCA.
It’s a place where they can
get help with schoolwork
and social skills. The
YMCA has a summer camp
that allows students to
participate in athletically
and educationally enriching
activities.
The summer camp also
creates leaders in the
community beginning
at the age of 13 with the
Leadership-in-Training
program. Through this
program, the teenagers can
eventually become YMCA
summer camp counselors.
The full day camp and
teen leadership camp have
schedules available from
May 30th through July 24th.

Readers of Unity East
of Atlanta have just completed
a pre-K classroom reading
project, in partnership with
the Rockdale County Public
School System (RCPS).
The project for the 2016-

342 pre-K students in each
of the 13 Rockdale County
Elementary School’s 16 pre-K
classrooms.
Unity in the Community
Volunteer Readers read a
book to the students then gave
each one a book to take home
with them, complete with a
bookplate, stating who gave
the book to the child, and
space for the child’s name, and
a bookmark. Funding for the
books was provided by grants
from local organizations.
Judy Bralley, leader of
the five-person group of
volunteers, said, “Not only did
I personally have phenomenal
experiences with each
classroom I visited, but had
nothing but reports of fun and
rewarding times from each of
the other volunteers.”
Shauna Miller, Rockdale
County Public Schools Early
Learning Coordinator stated,
