The CDC offers the following fantastic information on how women can increase their chances of having a healthy baby :
Plan ahead
Get 400 micrograms of folic acid every day to help prevent major birth defects of the developing brain and spine .
See a healthcare professional regularly . Prenatal care is important to do early and regularly throughout pregnancy . If you are trying to have a baby or are just thinking about it , it is not too early to start getting ready for pregnancy .
Avoid harmful substances
Alcohol : There is no known safe amount , no safe time and no known safe type of alcohol to drink during pregnancy . Drinking during pregnancy can cause miscarriage , stillbirth and a range of physical , behavioral and intellectual disabilities . The best advice is to stop drinking when trying to get pregnant .
Smoking : Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of preterm birth and birth defects such as cleft lip or palate . It ’ s never too late to quit smoking if you ’ re already pregnant . Quitting smoking before getting pregnant is best .
Marijuana and other drugs : Using marijuana and other drugs during pregnancy can lead to preterm birth , low birth weight or health problems including birth defects . Even if using marijuana for medical reasons , speak with a doctor about alternative therapies with pregnancy-specific data .

Choose a healthy lifestyle
Strive to reach and maintain a healthy weight before getting pregnant to reduce the risk of several serious birth defects .
Keep chronic conditions like diabetes under control .
Talk to a healthcare provider about :
Medications : Some of which can cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy .
Vaccinations : Some of which are specifically recommended during pregnancy to protect against infections that can cause birth defects .
Flu : Pregnant women with flu have increased risk of preterm birth or serious problems . Getting the flu shot during pregnancy has been shown to protect both mom and baby for up to six months after delivery .

Pregnant women eligible for Medicaid or food stamps are automatically eligible for the Women , Infants and Children ’ s program , which offers counseling on good nutrition during pregnancy and includes healthy foods to promote a healthy pregnancy and recovery postpartum .
