Integrity. Community? Excellence. Tom Reidy only knew three of the four pillars of R.I.C.E. on his first day at Brother Rice, but you can bet he knows them all by now. Reidy is more used to Faith, Excellence, and Family, the motto of Tampa Catholic High School, where he served as Principal for eight years before accepting the job as the new President of Brother Rice. Mr. Tom Reidy Reidy brought about some change to the school in Tampa. Tampa Catholic is three years into an iPad program that involved a more gradual introduction than the one at Brother Rice. Reidy also launched a campaign for a new performing arts center, a technology center, and new lockers. So in short, Reidy is no stranger to change. He also understands that he is a change. “I hope that I’ll come in and be one who listens, who will be calculated in making decisions, and who will take input from those around me,” he said during an exclusive interview with the Chieftain in May. Reidy claims he is ready to hear the ideas of Brother Rice students, ideas that have never been thought of before. Reidy says he is ready for a collaborative effort, but knows that, ultimately, P AGE 1 he has the final decision. He is ready for the “Don’t-bring-that-Southern-stuff-uphere” attitude, but he’s not going to let it change him. If there is one thing that Reidy believes, it is that God placed him at Brother Rice, at this time, for a reason. As far as immediate change, Reidy doesn’t see any changes to the day-to-day operations coming quickly. “Change is something you have to be very calculated with,” he said. Reidy was born and raised in the snowy state of Vermont, so he knows how to use a shovel. His kids, however, still have to learn the ground rules for a snowball fight. As far as sports go (because, yes, this is Brother Rice), Reidy is drawn toward baseball. His allegiance flipped from the Boston Red Sox to the Tampa Bay Rays during a playoff series, so there is hope for the Tigers. Reidy also enjoyed the Lightning’s dominance of the Wings. Time will tell whether or not he adopts the rich Detroit sports culture. Reidy is the second President of Brother Rice. He is bringing with him our new Principal, Ms. Therese Jackson. As Brother Rice transitions to Reidy, the position of President will no doubt be changed. But in a time of change at Brother Rice, Reidy believes that he is what the school needs.
