Letter from the Chair

I ’ m always amazed when I pause and reflect on the remarkable scientific and technological innovations that have occurred in my lifetime . From the personal computer , internet and cellphones , to barcodes , ATMs and Bitcoin , to self-driving cars and space tourism , there have been countless life-changing advances . What are even more remarkable to me are the lifesaving advances that have occurred in that same timeframe , like the pioneering innovation that has propelled progress in organ transplantation at Baylor Scott & White Annette C . and Harold C . Simmons Transplant Institute for nearly 40 years .
It takes courage to perform a liver transplant on a 5-year old girl dying of liver failure . It ’ s especially courageous if that procedure is the hospital ’ s first transplant . But that is what happened in
1984 at BSW Simmons Transplant Institute in Dallas . For nearly four decades , the courage it took to perform that surgery has defined Baylor Scott & White ’ s commitment to innovation and excellence for its patients , and historic progress has been made since day one : More than 10,000 patient lives have been transformed through heart , lung , kidney , liver , pancreas , islet cell and uterus transplants Now home to Texas ’ largest liver transplant program , which is one of the top 10 in the US ; the world ’ s largest uterus transplant program and North Texas ’ largest kidney transplant program Participation in more than 60 research protocols and training more than 50 transplant surgeons who are now operating worldwide I am personally grateful to the leadership and bold vision that have driven transplantation forward at Baylor
Scott & White and to those in the community whose philanthropic support has played an instrumental role in accelerating this progress .
As we approach the 40th anniversary of transplant at Baylor Scott & White , the Gift of Life Gala in April 2024 will give us all the opportunity to reflect on the innovation and excellence that has restored countless lives . To reflect on organ donors and their families who gave the ultimate gift , the possibility of life . To reflect on patients whose perseverance continues to amaze . To reflect on the physicians and leaders whose commitment to enhancing research , care and outcomes is unwavering .
We will have more opportunities to reflect on our history and this milestone in the months ahead as well as how philanthropy can continue to fuel progress for patients and families for another 40 years .
