As secretary of the Washington Mental Health Counselors Association from 2013 – 2018 , I have a great deal of record-keeping and by-laws interpretation experience . Additionally , the record of the organization kept by the secretary is an important part of continuing the development of a nonprofit supporting the profession of Clinical Mental Health Counselors in the state .
My goal as secretary of AMHCA is to support the board and members by creating a system of records of the organization as well as advance the objectives of the membership for sustainability and expansion of professional innovation by supporting legislation and developing new lines of revenue .

I have maintained an active practice of pastoral , clinical , and forensic counseling , along with service to my profession , since 2001 . I received the prestigious International Association of Addictions and
Offender Counselors Outstanding Addictions / Offender Professional Award in 2009 . Further , I have assisted the clinical mental health counseling profession as treasurer ( 2017 – 2019 ), president ( 2019 – 2020 ), and past president ( 2020 – 2021 ) for the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors Association , which culminated in the association ’ s Outstanding Service & Leadership Award ( 2020 ) along with being conferred the AMHCA Diplomate in Advanced Clinical Mental Health Counseling Practice .
I currently serve on the FMHCA Government Relations Committee and the AMHCA Interstate Portability Task Force , and I am on the editorial boards of the Journal of Aggression , Maltreatment & Trauma , and the Journal of Family Trauma , Child Custody & Child Development ( formerly the Journal of Child Custody ).
As AMHCA treasurer , I bring a passion for the business of counseling . After 12 years in a lucrative and sustainable private practice , I became the first franchisee of Thriveworks in 2013 , becoming financially solvent and profitable within several weeks of operation . Over the next seven years , my team and I built from scratch our three clinic locations , which flourished into a multimillion-dollar enterprise . I successfully exited as owner / CEO after acquisition in November 2020 .
Currently in solo practice once again , I approach therapy from a values-based perspective . The focus of my clinical practice is helping those , or their loved ones , who have type 1 diabetes ( T1D ), latent autoimmune diabetes of adulthood ( LADA ), or maturity onset diabetes of the young ( MODY ) adjust , cope , and manage the condition
AMHCA thanks the board members whose three-year terms expired June , 30 , 2022 : Past President Angele Moss – Baker ( see her letter on page 6 ) and Director-at-Large Tony Onorato .
Terms for newly elected AMHCA board members run for three years , from July 1 , 2022 , through June 30 , 2025 . The three-year term for Dr . Sanders-Burnett includes a year as president-elect , a year as president , and a year as past-president . so they can get back to living well .

I have been involved in the counseling profession as a professional and community advocate in many capacities for more than 35 years . I bring a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience to my position as director at-large . In addition to being a team player , I am known to be a visionary , goal-driven and a bridge-builder .
An AMHCA member since 2011 , I have worked as substance abuse counselor , school counselor , rehabilitation counselor , and college professor . Currently I am business owner of a nationwide private practice group . I have appeared on TV and radio shows , and I have given several workshop presentations as well as garnered several publication credits .
I am the president of the Miami chapter of mental health counselors , the primary owner of Dr . Luis Hines and Associates , and director of treatment operations for five locations in three states , in which I am licensed to practice . In addition to positions I hold at various professional and fraternal organizations , I am a member of AMHCA , American Counseling Association , several AMHCA and ACA chapters , American Counselor Education and Supervision Association , and American Association of Christian Counselors .
In my 20 + years as a business owner of a nationwide private practice group — in addition to presiding over meetings in business , professional , and community organizations — I have experience with budgetary operations , financial reports , and management . I will use my experience , skills , and vision to take AMHCA to the next level and to build bridges and embrace diversity within the organization . There are strengths in diversity , not in division .
