In times of crisis , we must count

our blessings . Or , in the case of long-suffering commuters , our pennies . One of the few upsides of the lockdown situation is the pot of money many of us are saving on train fares . For London workers commuting from the south coast , this can add up to more than £ 4,000 a year , while season tickets from Manchester commuting towns such as Burnley and Halifax can cost close to £ 3,000 . With money and time on our hands , now could be the moment to consider investing those savings . For novice investors , this is a golden opportunity : presented with a sum they had already written off , they have the potential to be freer with their money , helping to take some of the anxiety out of that all-important first step into markets .
