Beta Club has
announced that
four Newton County
School System (NCSS)
schools have achieved
2017 National Beta School
of Merit status! Oak Hill
Elementary School, South
Salem Elementary School,
Clements Middle School,
and Liberty Middle School
earned this recognition by
offering National Beta to
all eligible grades on their
campus.
According to Bob Bright,
chief executive officer of
the National Beta Club,
T
the prestigious honor is
indicative of each school’s’
“dedication to academic
excellence, leadership
development, and
commitment to celebrating
students’ achievements.”
Each school will receive
a National Beta School
of Merit window decal
as a symbol of their
accomplishment and
will also be publicized at
the 2017 National Beta
Convention in Orlando,
Florida.

5th, the Rockdale
County Branch of
the National Association for
the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP) awarded
four $1,000 scholarships to
Rockdale County 2017 high
school graduates during
its monthly meeting. The
scholarships were awarded
to Kobe Bowen, Erica Frank,
Justine McPherson, and
Galilea Najara.
Kobe Bowen of Salem
High School will attend the
University of West Georgia;
Erica Frank of Rockdale High
School will attend Agnes Scott
College; Justine McPherson
of Heritage High School will
attend Emory University;
and Galilea Najara Garcia of
the Rockdale Magnet School
for Science and Technology
will attend the University of
Georgia.
To receive the scholarship,
applications had to be
graduating seniors that
attended a Rockdale County
high school. The applicants
were required to write an
essay that outlined their
achievements in school and
in the community, as well
as describe why they should
be given the prestigious
