Make your own Tabletop Volcano !

ROMANS
The April issue of AQUILA was all about the Roman Empire . One place that has helped us learn a lot about this period in history is the city of Pompeii . When Pompeii was engulfed by a terrifying volcano , it left behind a captivating time capsule for modern humans to learn about the aftereffects of the natural disaster .

HARVEY ’ S MISSION

Real active volcanoes are a bubbling hot danger zone . So instead , I want you to create a bubbling , cold mess with this tabletop volcano . Just for fun !

GET STARTED

Step 1 :
Make the volcano model by squashing a heap of mud , or plasticine – or even wet newspaper if it ’ s easier – around your bottle . Be careful not to get anything inside the bottle !
ACTIVITY SKILLS
30 mins
DIFFICULTY
Step 2 :
Carefully add the bicarbonate of soda to the bottle ( if you have a funnel this will make it a lot easier . You can always make one out of a sheet of newspaper ).
Step 3 :
In a jug , mix the vinegar with your food colouring until you get the colour brightness you want .
Step 4 :
When you ’ re ready to create the eruption , pour your coloured vinegar carefully into the neck of your bottle ( again , a funnel could be useful here ). The reaction will cause foaming ‘ lava ’ to pour out the vent and down the sides of your volcano . o
o
YOU WILL NEED :
A fairly deep metal or plastic tray ( a roasting tin will do )
A small bottle with a narrow neck
Step 5 :
You can repeat this as many times as you like – you don ’ t need to put in more bicarb each time . Just add more vinegar until the foaming stops . Try using different colours .
This is NOT how a real volcano works of course ! How do you think it is different ?
HARVEY WANTS TO SEE
YOUR VOLCANOES !
