Deadline approaches for state VP nominations

The Sept . 7 deadline for nominations for state ACSA 2019-20 vice president and vice president for legislative action are rapidly approaching , so the call is going out for nominations to be submitted .

Immigrant student leaves family to find better life in U . S .
It was the hardest decision Rolando Pablo Lorenzo made in his young life . At the age of 14 , Rolando left his family and his life in Guatemala for better opportunities in the United States .
“ I came here with a dream ,” Rolando said , “ and to be somewhere in life . Leaving my family , I wish I could have them with me here . Supporting me . Giving me love that most of the kids need .”
Rolando made the trek from Guatemala to California with his grandfather before eventually landing in the small community of Paicines where he now lives with his uncle . Rolando admits he struggled to adapt to his new surroundings .
“ When I arrived in California , it was different ,” Rolando said . “ Very different . The culture . The language . Traditions . Everything .”
And then there was the language barrier .
Impacting the entire school district

English Language Learner Academy introduced
The English Language Learner Academy is the newest ACSA academy , and it will premier at Stagg Elementary School in LAUSD Sept . 14 . The academy focuses on leadership for accountability , instruction and advocacy within the context of the Local Control Funding Formula and Every Student Succeeds Act .
The first in the state , the ELL Academy , was designed by a steering committee led by ACSA leader Angel Barrett , who will be co-director of the academy with Yvonne Contreras from Los Angeles COE . Recognized as a California Distinguished Principal in 2009 , Barrett led Plummer Elementary School in LAUSD from an
API of 405 to 862 during her tenure . Barrett also served on the committees of both the ELA / ELD framework and the math framework during her three years on the Instructional Quality Commission . Contreras has 30-plus years in education and is director of Curriculum and Instruction for LACOE . The ELL Academy will meet 70 hours during the 2018-19 school year on Friday nights and Saturdays .
