ACSA issues endorsements in state races

The ACSA Board of Directors has endorsed candidates running in the November election for California constitutional officers , which include the offices of governor , lieutenant governor , secretary of state , attorney general , treasurer and controller .
ACSA has endorsed the following candidates in the listed constitutional officer races :
• Governor : Gavin Newsom

• Secretary of State : Alex Padilla
• Attorney General : Xavier Becerra
• Treasurer : Fiona Ma
• Controller : Betty Yee

Stella Linardi knows what some people may think of her . As an undocumented immigrant , she says she often finds herself trying to prove her worth .
“ I think a lot of people see immigrants as more of a burden that the nation has to compensate for ,” Stella said . “ But a lot of students like me , we all just want to go to college . We all just want to do something with our lives and give back . It ’ s just really hard in this climate to not know whether you ’ re wanted or not .”
Born in Indonesia , Stella and her family immigrated to the United States when she was just 3 years old .
“ They came to America to do what was right by their kids and their families to create something better ,” Whitney High Assistant Principal RoseEllen Shea said .
“ And for all those years even being here , it was scary for her to be here . It was scary for her to put herself out .”
Stella and her family spent the next decade trying to save up enough money in

hopes that one day , Stella could call herself a United States citizen . She received temporarily relief in 2016 when she became a DACA recipient .

Student board member . The State Board of Education is now accepting applications for the 2019-20 Student Board Member position . ACSA advocating on key bills impacting schools
The state Legislature wrapped up their session at the end of August and sent a flurry of bills to Gov . Brown ’ s desk .
The governor is now sifting through more than 900 bills to see which ones he will sign into law , or which ones he might veto .
Naturally , with many education-related bills , ACSA has already made its positions known to the governor ’ s office .
However , on two bills in particular , ACSA is seeking members ’ help to request specific actions by the governor . On one bill we are asking for his signature , and on the other , his veto .
Assembly Bill 1951
ACSA is asking members to contact the governor ’ s office and request that he sign AB 1951 ( O ’ Donnell ). This bill would allow districts to make the decision on having 11th grade students take the SAT or ACT in lieu of the existing 11th grade Smarter Balanced assessment .
There are at least two reasons to point out in requesting the governor ’ s signature . First , taking the SAT or ACT during the school day opens the doors for underrepresented student groups to have access to scholarships , practice tools and college application fee waivers . It also provides that
