Thanksgiving Tales

Some students have unique traditions

Thanksgiving is one of the great American holidays , conjuring images of turkey and pumpkin pie . But some Brother Rice families choose to take a different approach to celebrating the holiday . The Chieftain staff caught up with a few of them , and here are their stories .
Senior Mohamed Nasry sees Thanksgiving as more of a reason to get together with family and enjoy each other ’ s company . Now you might be saying , “ How exactly is this different ?” The answer to that is simple : They celebrate in any way that feels right .
In other words , they don ’ t force themselves to partake in the traditional Thanksgiving customs . They do whatever they think would be best , whether it ’ s going on vacation , getting together to watch football , or even having a huge meal made of their favorite foods , as opposed to traditional Thanksgiving foods .
-Patrick Karam
Like most of us , Sophomore Peter Rosa and his family have a traditional family gathering and turkey-eating fest . The difference is they do it in Florida with their extended family .
“ It ’ s been a tradition since I was a kid ,” Rosa said . The family , which includes fellow Rice grads Nick ‘ 15 and Andrew ‘ 16 , will be going South for the ninth straight year .
-Joe Simpson
In metro Detroit , an established Thanksgiving tradition is going to the parade downtown . For Junior Zach Moraitis , the parade is his Thanksgiving .
“ My family and I usually park a block away and walk to a local restaurant ,” he said . “ After a hot chocolate , we head to Woodward to find a spot and enjoy the parade .”
His favorite part is when Santa waves to him as he cruises down the street in his sleigh . Zach and his family enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner , but never without the parade first . He wouldn ’ t have it any other way .
-Nick Moisides
For most families , getting together for a Thanksgiving meal is a tradition . But for some die-hard football fans , it revolves around the Detroit Lions . Before all of this COVID madness , Junior Conner Kulka ’ s favorite Thanksgiving tradition was going to the Lions game .
“ I always loved seeing my Lions play , even if they aren ’ t very good .” said Kulka . “ My Thanksgiving would always start with the game and end with a homemade meal at my house .”
