ICHTHUS WINTER 2019
Easing the pathway to a preaching vocation
At around the time you are reading this issue of Ichthus, the LWPT Grants Committee will
be convening at our second Grant Awards meeting of 2019 to carefully consider the many
applications we receive from students looking to begin or further their career in ministry through
our Vocational Grants programme. The programme, which began in 2014, has already helped over
80 students through awards totalling over £65,000. This has been possible only through the kind
generosity of LWPT Members and donors like yourself.
Taking the decision to pursue a church vocation takes courage. There is often not a defined career
path for students to follow, their future earnings can be uncertain and they may also have to deal
with doubt and uncertainty of family members and friends. Our Vocational Grants programme can
help alleviate some of the stresses of the decision-making by providing financial support towards
their studies. It is especially valuable to students from less well-off backgrounds and can often make
the difference between them being able to pursue their vocation or not. Grants can be used towards
tuition fees and materials for a recognised course that helps students explore or develop their
preaching skills.
You can find out just how much of a difference our Grants programme makes on page 3 of this
edition of Ichthus, where Miles Tradewell, a student at the University of St Andrews, shares his story
with us.
