GAVILAN JOINT COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT Written By Robin Shepherd T A New Century of Education his year, Gavilan Community College celebrates its 100 th anniversary as an engine of higher education that now serves college students across southern Santa Clara and San Benito counties. Gavilan is marking its centennial year by showcasing its rich history while boldly pursuing its vision for success in the next century. A capable, community-minded and welcoming presence at Gavilan’s helm is Dr. Kathleen Rose. In 2016, Trustees of Gavilan Joint Community College District named Dr. Rose as its President and Superintendent. Deep experience and sincere passion for her work have enabled Rose to step confidently into the role. 28 GILROY • MORGAN HILL • SAN MARTIN Progress has been steady since Rose took office. In 2017, a new Educational Master Plan was adopted, followed by a Facilities Master Plan in 2018. The sound- ness of these plans is enhanced by their strong linkages. Every element of facility design, new construction, and renovation in the Facilities Master Plan supports corresponding educational goals and requirements as defined in the Educational Master Plan. “The overarching work of the State of California is to make community colleges the launchpad for all things higher ed, career and technology ed, noncredit and com- munity-based education,” Rose said. “Our on-campus and online environments need to provide creative and produc- tive settings for all of our programs for all of our students.” FALL/HOLIDAY 2019 gmhtoday.com
