The Drake Restaurant Hosts ‘ The Drake Gives ’

Laguna College of Art and Design students celebrated graduation with a commencement ceremony last Friday , May 19 at the Festival of the Arts ’ Irvine Bowl .
LCAD Board of Trustees member and Art Directors Guild President Nelson Coates was this year ’ s commencement speaker . The LCAD ’ s stu-
dent speaker was Peyton Webster , who graduated from the Graphic Design and Digital Media program with an emphasis on Action Sports . Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whalen also addressed the 152 art school graduates during the ceremony .
The night before commencement , LCAD hosted a dinner for graduates at the Laguna

Native New Yorker Alec Glasser , founder of The Drake Restaurant in Laguna Beach , became passionate about music while attending public school programs in Queens . He learned to play saxophone , clarinet and flute , and even played gigs with teen bands at upscale resorts .
Glasser also spent summers working at The Drake Hotel on Park Avenue as an elevator operator and bellman . The Drake management agreed to let Glasser stay at the hotel provided he was on call if needed .
The Drake Hotel was reportedly host to numerous bands and celebrities of the day , including Jimi Hendrix , The Who , Led Zeppelin , Mohamad Ali , Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis , Jr .
As he became friendly with these and other stars , Glasser was allowed to run afterhours parties in unoccupied hotel suites with the food and beverage provided by the Drake .

From Fire Pits to a Lifeguard Pride Tower : Residents Share Concerns

Fire pit removal and a rainbow-themed lifeguard tower celebrating Pride were discussed during the Laguna Beach City Council meeting on May 16 . Residents gathered in person and via Zoom to express concerns and share thoughts on the next steps for the South Laguna beaches .
Following the city ’ s acquisition of Laguna ’ s southern beaches from the county in March , residents and community members proposed various ideas for how to move forward .
Marine Safety Chief Kevin Snow and Assistant City Manager Gavin Curran presented recommended actions addressing community concerns , including natural beach hazards , trash , litter and the minimal restrooms available . With the summer months right around the corner , the crowds will follow . Residents expressed concerns about issues regarding the increase in beachgoers .
One issue was the reinstitution of the fire pits at Aliso Beach . During the transition of South Laguna beaches to the city ,
the last fire pit was removed , leaving Laguna with the choice of either purchasing wood or propane fire pits .
“ The recommended action is to consider purchasing portable propane fire pits and develop an application to rent portable fire pits at Aliso Beach ,” Curran said . “ Permanent fire pits at lease will provide some issues due to the location within the very high fire safety zone .”
