We are using a stencil to create mountains on black foam board. I like using black as it makes the colors pop. The result is unexpected because you apply several col- ors on the stencil and push to blend to make new colors, also called COLOR MIXING. It’s fun because your pressure and movement of hand to push the color away from the stencil onto the black paper is so individual. There is no right or wrong. Enjoy the process. Always praise your child. Engage your child in conversation. Suggestions: “Do you see where the sky meets the land? That is called the HORIZON LINE.” Ask your child if they have a memory of going for a drive to the mountains. Talk about a trip you may have taken or a drive to someone’s house. When you are driving the road ahead of you seems to get smaller and smaller; this is called PERSPECTIVE. We drew the road making it converge on the HORIZON LINE. Engaging your child to remember the sights, sounds, smells of what they are drawing makes the drawing more real. Suggested questions: What is the difference when you drive in the mountains than in town? Noises, colors, number of cars, sights? When the artwork is finished, stand back and feel proud! The process and being free to create is everything! GILROY • MORGAN HILL • SAN MARTIN SPRING 2020 gmhtoday.com
