Dave Storton holds a
Master's Degree in Adult
Education and has been
teaching since 1993. He is
recognized by the State of
California as an expert in
driver training, teaching
specialized driving courses
to firefighters, search and
rescue personnel, law
enforcement, and the

instructor for the emergency
vehicle operations course at the San Jose Police Academy and the South Bay
Regional Academy. He teaches instructor level courses in emergency vehicle
driving, advanced instructor courses, off road driving, and dignitary
protection driving. He also teaches adult learning concepts in the basic and
intermediate instructor development course for instructors of all types
throughout California. Dave has been featured for his driving expertise on
Mythbusters, Fox News Channel’s Fox Report with Sheppard Smith, The
Discovery Channel, the New York Times, the San Jose Mercury News, and
the Monterey Herald. He founded The Driving Company in 2003 to address
the needs of off road emergency responders.
Dave enjoyed a 30-year career in law enforcement, with 28 years at the San
Jose Police Department. Before his seven-year assignment as Director of the
San Jose Police Academy, he had assignments as a field training officer, an
academy training officer, and supervisor of in-service training. He was twice
awarded the department’s Hazardous Duty Medal for actions taken during
his time working the street. He is also the recipient of the Blue and Gold
Wounded In Service Award. Dave retired as commander of the Financial
and High Tech Crimes Unit in the Detective Bureau.
