MAID
New Federal Reporting Requirements
Health Canada to identify trends in requests for the provision of MAID
F
ederal regulations for monitoring
medical assistance in dying (MAID)
came into force on November 1, 2018.
These regulations set out who must
report, what information is required, timelines for
reporting, and to whom this information must be
provided. The federal regulations serve a number
of purposes, including identifying and monitoring
trends in requests for and the provision of MAID.
The Ontario government has developed a hybrid
approach for fulfilling reporting requirements.
This means that depending on the MAID-related
outcome, physicians will report either to the Of-
fice of the Chief Coroner for Ontario or directly
to Health Canada.
When is a report to the Office of the
Chief Coroner required?
A report to the Office of the Chief Coroner is
required when a physician provides MAID by
administering a substance causing death, or pre-
scribes a substance for self-administration and the
patient dies from MAID.
How long do I have to make a report to
the Office of the Chief Coroner?
Physicians must report to the Office of the Chief
Coroner, immediately after the physician becomes
aware of the death or immediately after death is
confirmed.
