Have a go at this fun and creative activity . It ’ s surprising how simple shapes can make such beautiful artworks !

STEP 1 :

Start by drawing a square that measures 10 cm by 10 cm .

STEP 2 :

Then use a ruler to measure 1 cm to the right of the bottom left corner and make a mark . Move around to the bottom right corner and make a mark 1 cm above it , then to the top right corner and make a mark 1 cm to the left of it , then to the top left corner and make a mark 1 cm below it .

STEP 3 :

Now use your ruler to join those points to make another square inside the first one .

STEP 4 :

Repeat step 2 , to make another smaller square inside the one you ’ ve just drawn .

STEP 5 :

Keep repeating until you have a pattern of squares inside the original one .

STEP 6 :

In the Megamaths issue of AQUILA we discovered how scientists think animals get beautiful patterns on their skin and fur ! Who knew Alan Turing ’ s name would pop up , I think that surprised all of us ! But cheetahs and zebras aren ’ t the only ones that ‘ use ’ maths to make patterns – you can too !

YOU WILL NEED

Paper

Pencil Ruler Colouring pens or pencils

Now try starting with a different shape , perhaps a triangle or a pentagon ! You can also change the distance between your points or the number of marks you make within your initial shape . To really mix things up , draw a different number of marks on each round and see how many different pictures you can make !
