Working with his father, Harrison, the pair volunteer for Meals on Wheels providing food and a smile to those in need. “Every opportunity that I can when I have a day off we go,” Harrison said. Being both a single dad and working a factory job doesn’t give Harrison much free time, but he tries to make time to volunteer “Aside from work and other stuff outside work, my time is pretty limited,” he said, “So we try to do (Meals on Wheels) as much as possible.” Harrison first got involved with the program during his days in the United States Air Force while looking for volunteer opportunities. “I was always happy to do it,” he said. “I loved the driving and taking people food that they needed. I was happy to use my own time to do that.” After moving back to his hometown of Emporia, staying involved with Meals on Wheels was one of Harrison’s top priorities after he got settled in. He began taking Marvell along near his third birthday and they’ve been a team for about four months now. Good Evening “We’ll walk up there together and I’ll hold the heavy bag and he’ll hold the light bag,” Harrison said. “He’s not shy at all to walk in and say ‘Hi!’ It really lightens up their day.” The pair deliver along multiple routes in Emporia, but Harrison’s favorite is along Union, Market and Sylvan streets — the same area where he grew up. “That’s really cool seeing my old neighborhood,” Harrison said. “Seeing some of the same people that invited me over for popsicles; it’s pretty cool to deliver meals to some of those same people.” Harrison said even though MarPlease see Meals, Page 3 VOL. 124, NO. 300 Have a wonderful Father’s Day!
