Culture collection is consider a valuable resource of microbial diversity due to its application in biotechnological processes. In this sense, is a solid structure, which preserves and provides a broad of microorganisms, cataloged with a code that contains its genus and specie, source, place, and year of isolation.

The Culture Collection of Agricultural Microbiology (CCMA- Coleção de Culturas da Microbiologia Agrícola) at Federal University of Lavras- Brazil, holds more than 2,000 yeasts and bacteria isolated mainly from fermented processes involving cocoa, silage, coffee, fruits, indigenous beverages, meat-based products, soil, and composting.

Within the CCMA, there are professionals who work together to maintain all the collection. Starting with full time Professor PhD. Rosane Freitas Schwan who is the director of the CCMA, Msc. Dirceu de Sousa Melo who is the curator and Ivani Maria Gervasio who also helps maintain the culture collection strains as a technician. Also, other contributors such as PhD. Professor’s Disney Ribeiro Dias and Carla Avila. All work very hard for a certification.

The idea of creating a culture collection came from different works carried out by Professor Schwan and researchers, since her entrance at this University.

After the isolation of microorganisms, came the need of having a space for their maintenance and availability for future studies or usages.

The CCMA already has a number of registration (1083) and accreditation at the World Federation of Culture Collection (WFCC), which was obtain in January 2015. This conquer was possible thanks to the guidance of Professor PhD. Nelson Lima who is head of Micoteca da Universidade do Minho (MUM) and Professor PhD. Cledir Santos who is currently the head of Colección Chilena de Cultivos Tipo (CCCT).
