This week, Camp Alexander’s theme is “Tidal Wave.” It is the second water-centric week of the summer. Camps began on May 31 and last until August 5. He is relevant to every generation because he’s authentic. He has The main topic of discussion for the Emporia Recreation Commission board Monday evening was the 2016 − 2017 budget. Last month, the board approved for publication purposes only, a budget based on a 1.5 mill levy increase, or 8 mills in levy authority from the Emporia School District. Increasing the recreation commission’s levy through the Emporia School District from the current 6.5 to the maximum 8 mills would generate about $1.38 million in revenue. While there was no public comment on the budget, there was plenty of discussion about the budget by board members. In the end, the board approved the budget 4-1 based on the 1.5 mill increase, with Danny Giefer being the lone member who voted against. Giefer said he thought the board should take a different approach, as he didn’t know that he could explain to his neighbor how the additional money would be spent. “We’re jumping the budget by almost 25 percent, which is a large amount,” he said. “I would like to see a little more structure on what we are going to spend the money on versus just saying we’re just going to spend it on programs or something like that.” Board Chair Mike Helbert said there was a laundry list of things the board could use the money for, one being programs.
