the Judds won five Grammy

After disbanding in 1991,
Wynonna began a solo career,
releasing eight studio albums,
a live album, a holiday album
and two compilation albums in

20 singles of her own. Her first

The main topic of discussion
for the Emporia Recreation Commission board Monday evening
was the 2016 − 2017 budget.
Last month, the board approved for publication purposes
only, a budget based on a 1.5
mill levy increase, or 8 mills in
levy authority from the Emporia
School District.
Increasing the recreation commission’s levy through the Emporia School District from the current 6.5 to the maximum 8 mills
would generate about $1.38 million in revenue.
While there was no public comment on the budget, there was
plenty of discussion about the budget by board members.
In the end, the board approved the budget 4-1 based on
the 1.5 mill increase, with Danny
Giefer being the lone member
who voted against.
Giefer said he thought the
board should take a different
approach, as he didn’t know
that he could explain to his
neighbor how the additional
money would be spent.
“We’re jumping the budget by
almost 25 percent, which is a large
amount,” he said. “I would like to
see a little more structure on what
we are going to spend the money
on versus just saying we’re just
going to spend it on programs or
something like that.”
Board Chair Mike Helbert
said there was a laundry list of
things the board could use the
money for, one being programs.
It was stated earlier in the meeting that many of the recreation
programs had seen an increase in
participantion this year.
“In order for us to provide the
facilities and the programs that
