environments when they are brought to the hospitals in need of emergency care.

Let’s face it, a hospital can be a scary
place. Even more frightening can be
a trip to the Emergency Room especially
when the person in need is your
child. And now in the face of COVID-19, the
stakes are that much higher and the concerns
that much greater.
With temperatures hovering close to
90 degrees, the excitement of water activities,
fun in the sun and playing outdoors
translates for those who work in a pediatric
emergency room to biking and skateboard
injuries, swimming accidents, sunburns
and dehydration. Because no matter how
careful we are about practicing safety,
accidents happen, and children get sick —
even during a global pandemic.
Our top-ranked hospitals have remained
open throughout the pandemic to care for
our communities and pediatric ERs are no
exception. New Jersey families are fortunate
to have some of the finest hospitals
in the country, all going to great lengths to
ensure the safety of the youngest members.
From reconfiguring pediatric emergency
facilities to masked and gloved care teams,
three northern New Jersey hospitals
— Chilton Medical Center, Hackensack
University Medical Center and Holy Name
Medical Center — are taking extra steps
to keep their pediatric Emergency Rooms
open, safe and ready to provide urgent care.
Chilton Medical Center in Pompton
Plains has developed a Pediatric Hybrid
Unit, one of the few in the state, combining
pediatric emergency services
and in-patient rooms in one unit within
the hospital. With four inpatient bed
rooms and seven pediatric emergency
department treatment rooms, the facility
is completely separate with its own
entrance and exit. “Patients — newborn
to age 20 — are evaluated quickly, typically
